You need to be smarter than the Sh-t or problem you are working with.

Years ago, when I owned a woodworking shop, I used to tell the carpenters something that always made them laugh.

When a tool jammed or a machine broke I would say. "You have to be smarter than the thing you are working with"

It was not meant to insult the equipment. It was simply a reminder that frustration rarely solves anything. If something is not working, step back , look at it differently, and figure out how the system actually works.

That advise has followed me everywhere. Including Travel.

Technology doesn't always cooperate. Websites behave strangely. Train tickets don't print. Apps suddenly refuse to load just when you need them. But the same rule applies.

Slow down. Look at the problem. Try another way.

Eventually the system reveals itself.

And when it does, you feel just a lttle bit victorious.

Travel like workworking, rewards patience and curiosity. The trick is remembering that the tools are there to serve you - not the other way around.

So whenever something goes sideways while planning a trip or when you are on a trip, I remiind myself of those days in the shop.

Be patient

Be determined

And remember

"You have to be smarter than the problem you're working with."

"Travel like woodworking, rewards patience and curiosity."
